SMOKING
Other than the fact that smoking is bad for your health, smoking materials, including cigarettes, pipes, and cigars, started an estimated 16,500 home structure fires reported to U.S. fire departments in 2016. These fires caused 660 deaths, 1,060 injuries and $372 million in direct property damage. Smoking materials caused 5% of reported home fires, 23% of home fire deaths, 10% of home fire injuries, and 6% of the direct property damage.
According to the NFPA, not only does the Surgeon General state smoking can cause significant health risks, but its also not healthy for your home.
