Our proud and storied tradition of volunteer fire service started in 1942. From those humble beginnings until now citizens of Edgmont, Thornbury, and surrounding areas have responded when the call for help went out. Helping neighbors in a time of need. The type and size of the emergencies being faced today is much greater. Gone are the days of fighting the old barn fire, and replaced with an all hazards approach, such as addressing hazardous materials, high angle rescue, structures that burn much faster due to the new building materials, as well as the modern furnishings. The safety of our firefighters is paramount and this is why we require a high level of training, modern vehicles, sophisticated equipment, and new personal protection equipment.

Within the fire service there are 8 cultural strengths and they are Compassion, Integrity, Moral Character, Work Ethic, Pride, Courage, Loyalty, and Respect. Our primary mission is to save lives, meaning if a life is savable our firefighters will rush in with great risk to themselves to save that life.
Like all professional entities people are the most important resource of our fire company. To prioritize; we emphasize training, firefighter safety, recruitment and retention. In order to maintain safety allowing the firefighters to perform their duties we boast up-to-date fire vehicles. Not only do these vehicles transport our teams to the scene of the emergency, but they also pump massive quantities of water and foam. The vehicles are also wide variety of tools and equipment. Edgmont Township Fire Company No.1 is located in the village of Gradyville, near Rte 352. This is the location of our new firehouse, next to the township building. As mentioned above we are an all hazards fire company, meaning we respond to everything from automatic fire alarms, vehicle accidents to fully involved structure fires.

As a member of our community we encourage you to volunteer and become a part of our family. Becoming a member isn’t an all or nothing. There are a variety of committees could use your time and talents. However, if you feel the call to become a firefighter we certainly encourage that as well. Join your neighbors in serving your community by responding to the call for help.
“We have many proud traditions within the fire service. We hold to those traditions as firmly as
possible as we serve today.” – Chief Curtis Roehrig, Sr.
