The Edgmont Township Fire Police unit is a highly trained, PA State Certified, professional group of men and women. Their duty is to function within the Edgmont Fire Company to maintain the protection, security and safety of the fire and EMS personnel, vehicles, and equipment while at an incident scene.

Traffic control is the main function of the Fire Police Officer’s duties. They maintain the flow of traffic around an incident, allowing for quick access to the scene for emergency vehicles and equipment. The closure of roads or highways is sometimes required.

Fire Police Officers are duly sworn officers of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, appointed by Edgmont Township and have similar responsibilities as law enforcement while on an emergency scene. Pursuant of PA State Law Title 75, Sections 3102 and 3327 as a motor vehicle operator, you are required by law to obey the Fire Police Officer on scene. Section 3327 provides for fines for people who fail to obey a Fire Police Officer’s instructions or indications related to traffic flow. (to read the PA State Law, select the links above)

Besides traffic control, other duties of the Fire Police are assisting PA State Police and Local Police Departments of surrounding municipalities, with road closures, DUI checkpoints, search and rescue, evidence protections at crime scenes, evacuations, parades, and community functions. 

Fire Police Officers are there to provide safety for the public, police, EMS and fire company personnel. Please pay attention to their instructions, directions, and signage. For the safety of all personnel please stay alert throughout an emergency scene.
